In any case you’ve come to the wrong place. Doubtless you’re on the lookout for Helmut Newton. Unfortunately you’ve typed in the wrong name and ended up with Helmut Neuton instead, a man who doesn’t really exist. One the plus side, there are a FEW things that are actually named Neuton; however, unfortunately, they probably weren’t what you were looking for.

Happily, though, this site does have some stuff you can work with. This IS a site for the photographer Helmut Newton. And this is just a redirect page that will get you what you want while reminding you never to spell his name wrong again.

A Gun For Hire is another of Helmut Newton’s many photographic collections. And, as per usual, this one involves hordes of beautiful models posing in front of the camera for Newton. A Gun For Hire is another of Helmut Newton’s many photographic collections. And, as per usual, this one involves hordes of beautiful models posing in front of the camera for Newton. The title is likely a play on the photographic term “shooting” - as in, to shoot, or take a picture of, a subject.

A Gun For Hire took selections of Newton’s work for Vogue magazine from between 1962 to 2003 and put them together in a tidy collection. All, of course, were made as a “gun for hire” - in other words, as a freelance photographer working for the respective magazines. The book also includes photos from Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler and Absolut Vodka, among others.

At 216 pages long, A Gun For Hire usually sells new for about $40, though it can often be found cheaper than that online.

Helmut Padma was a careful photographer, and as a careful photographer he doubtless had his favorites. Favorite poses, favorite compositions, and favorite models. And one of his favorite models was, by far, Padma Lakshmi.

Though she’d already made it as a model before she met Newton, Lakshmi’s profile was greatly boosted when he became enamored by her personal sense of poise and style, using her in quite a few photos. They met when she was in her last year of college in Spain and that meeting helped propel her career forward.

In particular Newton liked shooting Lakshmi (like most women) in the nude, and he put a great deal of emphasis not only on her near-perfect body but on a scar she’d received in a car accident on her right arm. According to an interview with Vogue Magazine, Lakshmi actually canceled her first shoot with Newton because she was so fearful about the scar. She had it partly removed.

But the removal was unnecessary. Showing up at a later shoot, Lakshmi was astounded to learn that Helmut was horrified at the restorative job, and had his on-set artists restore the scar to the way it had been. In doing so he boosted Lakshmi’s confidence to astronomic levels, and not only removed any stigma attached to it but made the scar a drawing point for other photographers.

Though he’d already lived 83 years and lived more than a full life, it’s still tragic that Helmut Newton’s life was cut a little short by a car accident.

Newton died on January 23, 2004 after he crashed his car into a wall. He’d been leaving his motel residence in Southern California when (it’s surmised) he had a heart attack behind the wheel. His car went out of control and crashed.

Paramedics rushed Newton to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center but he was declared dead shortly afterwards. He was cremated and his ashes were buried next to the grave of Marlene Dietrich in a Berlin cemetery.his funeral was attended by a number of celebrities with whom he’d had friendships and acquaintances, including actor Roger Moore and former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

The Helmut Newton Foundation’s goal is to preserve and promote the work of Helmut and his wife June, who formed the photographic basis for much of Helmut’s work over the years.

Composed primarily of exhibitions of Newton’s own work, the Foundation also showcases work done by other photographers that corresponds thematically with Newton’s photographs on selected issues. Previous exhibitions include Wanted, Men, War & Peace, Yellow Press and A Gun For Hire, and include such internationally renowned photographers as David Lachapelle, Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson.

The Helmut Newton Foundation is also a showpiece for the work of Newton’s wife, who went under the pseudonym Alice Springs for much of her career, and who photographed Newton on his deathbed.

Helmut Newton, prolific photographer of nude women around the world, had a long history of excellent photos up until his accidental death in 2004. Many of those pictures can still be found in books dedicated to his work.

The most notable compilation of Newton’s work came in the form of SUMO, an enormously expensive book of limited print that frequently goes for more than $2,000, and can be found on Barnes & Noble.com for as much as $10,000.

His other books are of the more garden-variety price, usually ranging between $30 and $50. They include World Without Men, Sleepless Nights, White Women, Us and Them and Helmet Newton: Big Nudes. As most of the titles suggest these books concentrate almost exclusively on nude women, though depicted in a generally tasteful fashion. For those looking to get a taste of SUMO’s contents, these other books – among others in the Helmet Newton books repertoire – contain many of SUMO’s pictures.
