Helmut Newton Gun For Hire
August 16th, 2008
A Gun For Hire is another of Helmut Newton’s many photographic collections. And, as per usual, this one involves hordes of beautiful models posing in front of the camera for Newton. The title is likely a play on the photographic term “shooting” - as in, to shoot, or take a picture of, a subject.
A Gun For Hire took selections of Newton’s work for Vogue magazine from between 1962 to 2003 and put them together in a tidy collection. All, of course, were made as a “gun for hire” - in other words, as a freelance photographer working for the respective magazines. The book also includes photos from Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler and Absolut Vodka, among others.
At 216 pages long, A Gun For Hire usually sells new for about $40, though it can often be found cheaper than that online.
